Resources Will be Provided by S.T.E.P. Up 4 Kids:
- A trained clinician or parent will help to organized and develop the support group.
- Minimal funding of advertising and library materials and assistance in the start up process will be provided.
- Parents will run the S.T.E.P. UP group according to the manual provided and under the supervision of the chair of the support group committee.
- Resources and support will be available as needed.
Getting Started:
- At the first group meeting, a secretary and treasurer will be nominated and elected by the group members.
- The group chair will review and provide each officer with a copy of the S.T.E.P. Up support group manual.
- A survey will be passed out to identify and prioritize the needs of the group.
- The secretary will review the results of the survey and discuss with the group at the next meeting before forming an agenda for the upcoming year.
Structure of Support Groups:
- Professional speaker with question & answer session.
- Open discussion with group facilitator on select topics by the group.
- Parent speaker/open discussion with group facilitator: Time will be allocated for members to discuss different issues and gain the support and guidance of fellow members.

- Diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder
- Comorbidity:differential diagnosis and treatment
- Psychiatric testing and education plans
- Long term prognosis
- Bipolar child coming of age
- Leaving home
- Hope for the future :new medications or therapies
- Medication management, side effects & discontinuation
- Therapy/groups
- Legal challenges
- Social skills groups
- Legislature updates
- Dealing with insurance companies
- Identifying resources in your community
